How Much Capital Do Business Buyers Actually Have?
A Facebook group poll inside a 260,100-member US business-for-sale community.
Most “buyer capital” stats come from surveys of aspiring entrepreneurs. This data comes from people participating in a buy/sell community right now.
Poll results
February 2026Question: “How much capital have you set aside to buy a business?”
Key finding
64% of respondents report $50,000 or more set aside. At a 10% down payment, that implies roughly $500,000+ in potential acquisition buying power.
About the Data
Business For Sale by Owner is a Facebook group for buying and selling businesses in the United States. It had 260,100 members as of February 2026. Of those, approximately 80% are buyers, 20% are sellers, and 95% are US-based.
In February 2026, members were asked one question via a native Facebook group poll: how much capital have you set aside to buy a business?
Respondents self-selected by answering a public poll. No compensation was provided. Raw vote counts were not exported from Facebook; results are reported as the percentages shown in the poll interface.
Summary
64%
have $50k or more
31%
have $100k or more
18%
have $250k or more
What This Means: The 10% Down “Multiplier”
Capital set aside is not the same as purchasing power. Many small-business acquisitions use financing structures where the buyer’s cash is a down payment rather than the full purchase price. A simple way to think about it: 10% down implies ~10× buying power.
In this poll, 33% of respondents reported $50k–$100k set aside, implying ~$500k–$1M buying power at 10% down. Another 31% reported $100k+ set aside, implying $1M+ buying power.
How This Compares to Other Research
Many published surveys focus on aspiring entrepreneurs rather than people actively engaged in buying or selling a business. This dataset reflects a self-selected subset of people who joined a community to take action.
